About the Risk Model ©

The Risk Model is a framework to assess and manage the risk of significant harm within statutory Children’s Social Services.

The risk of significant harm is the threshold for compulsory intervention. “Working Together 2010” outlines the expectation that Councils will use their own risk assessments to support practice. This model integrates risk assessment into social work processes and introduces tools for
risk screening, risk assessment and enquiring as to “the significance of any harm”. A library of other tools are available to support specialised assessments in areas such as change, substance misuse and neglect.

The main drivers for change within statutory Children’s Services emphasise the need for social workers to be judged by the quality of their decision making, rather than the outcome, and in the consistency of that decision making.
